‘Sprocket the Rocket’ learns to come back

Sprocket is a terrier x with a high prey drive. That means he likes to chase critters! We have recently moved to a new location so I am being very careful to set him up for success and not give him too much freedom too quickly.

Long line or drag ling

I like to use a harness and long line or drag line to stay in control. In this video Sprocket is wearing a drag line that has no handle (to avoid snags). It allows me to catch him easier and it also sort of ‘anchors’ him and slows him down. I always have my dogs wear a harness when using long lines or drag lines to protect their neck.

Tips:

• I alternate between holding the lead, Sprocket dragging the lead and letting him off lead depending on location and distractions.
• I have a distinct way of saying Sprocket’s name so he knows I’m calling him back. I say SSPROOCK-ETTE in a consistent, loud and distinctive way.
• I’m generous with my rewards when he is successful.
• I try not to call too often.
• I stay focused on him so I react IMMEDIATELY if I think he is loosing direction.
• I resort to using a long line when I’m not sure he will listen to me.
