Sammy’s fear of the car

Sammy is a rescue that had a pretty tough start to life. He has made heaps of progress with his dedicated owner. However he still struggles with anxiety about the getting in and travelling in the car.

Getting started

Patience is the most important thing to keep in mind when working with fearful dogs. They need to learn to trust gradually.

Tips:

• Sammy is always off lead so he gets to choose to jump in or not.
• I don’t ask him to jump in at first. First I just get him to eat treats off the ground near the car, then off the bumper etc.
• I use Sammy’s existing training to prolong his time in the car.
• I’m using very yummy treats (sausages) to reward Sammy and help him learn that the car is a great thing.
