The Hunt for Black Diamonds
This is a little insight into what it looks like to work as a commercial truffle hunter. From about 2015 to 2022 I spent the winter months searching for truffle with my furbabies. Rosie was an absolute ninja wee truffle huntress. I adopted her from the council dog pound in Tasman to train her for truffle hunting. She had an incredible work ethic and never missed a beat.
Sprocket came next to help Rosie. He did help but he was a little slow and would loose interest so he just helped for short periods when needed. Rosie needed more help, we had lots of truffle to find!
I then adopted Blue from the Nelson SPCA and trained him up. He was awesome! He was a covid pup though so he was undersocialised and sometimes struggled with people we met while working. But he was great at finding truffle!
After about 7 winters working as a contract commerical truffle hunting team, we hung up our truffle hunting boots. We still occasional help truffle farmers with training their own dogs to find truffle.
