Recall is one of the most important life skills we can teach our dogs. A dog who can run off lead and return when called can safely be given more freedom and will probably enjoy a better quality of life. If I was a dog, I would prefer to be off lead. Wouldn’t you? Off lead manners is a dog’s ticket to exploring, off lead play with other dogs (or avoiding it) and generally having some freedom to sniff, sniff and sniff some more.
Also, as a dog person, it is incredibly satisfying to stand in public, call your dog, and they actually come to you. Winning.
